What Would Jesus do?

“He has told you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:8 KJV

Some years ago, a catchy little phrase became popular in the Christian community. “What Would Jesus Do?” It is no mystery; we need only to look to Micah 6:8 for the answer.

Learning to do justice is about learning to see the world with God’s sense of impartiality. Some think of justice as punishment.  But God’s justice isn’t just about punishment; it’s about fairness. “To do justice “means to do what is fair. When we do God’s form of justice, our behavior reflects God’s standards, not our human reasoning, fermented by a perceived wrong inflicted on us.

To love mercy seems easier, but often it is not.  The Encyclopedia of the Bible states,” mercy requires both an inward disposition and an outward action.” The Apostle Paul said it this way, “do not return evil for evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 KJV.  As we extend mercy to another, we demonstrate Christianity in its purest form.

When we walk humbly with God, it means we fully recognize the poverty of mind, soul, spirit, and body that we all possess without the grace of God. When we are faced with addressing the horrible things people do, we fully recognize and humbly proclaim, “but for the Grace of God, there go I.” This recognition strengthens our commitment to do justice and love mercy. Amen.

Prayer:  Father, we love you. Today as we renew our commitment to you, allow us to use this scripture to do what Jesus would do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
