Overcoming

"Never repay evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all people. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath [of God,] for it is written: "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. "BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM; IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." - Romans 12:17-21 NASB20

Every time I get a cut or a flesh wound, my first thought is to cover it up after I stop the bleeding. I want to protect it from infection. However, I have found once the bleeding stops, leaving the wound in the open air makes it heal faster, even though there are times when covering it is necessary. There is now liquid bandaging that you brush on the wound and let dry, leaving it open to get plenty of air while protecting it from infection.

Mental and emotional wounds need similar care for healing.

Whether you have received a wound or given one to another, thoughts of justification like, “Why do I always have to do the right thing”; or “I’m not helping him; this is what they deserve!” flood the mind of us all.

Paul’s scripture here is challenging because he teaches us to live a life of vulnerability and unconditional compassion. A life of vulnerability empowers one to live truthfully and openly, allowing people to see your state of mind and heart standing firm in your God-given identity. Being this powerful, impactful, and inspiring moves in unconditional compassion by feeling the pain of another and being moved to offer whatever time, talent, and resources are available. This is what Paul means by overcoming evil with good—living vulnerably and giving goodness unconditionally, even to those perceived as enemies. God is the only One who can see all aspects of a matter; therefore, leave all anger, malice, and revenge in His hands and acknowledge deep hurts and wounds, both yours and others. As a result, healing begins.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I want to live Christlike in every area of my life. I yield my will to you. Help me see all people, even those I perceive as enemies through Your eyes. I want to live a life of vulnerability and unconditional compassion, following the ways of Christ.
