The Power of Words

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit." - Proverbs 18:21 NASB20

Most believers are familiar with this Scripture, though it is often misquoted to say, “The power of life and death are in the tongue.” It sounds nearly identical in meaning until you look deeper. The word “power” in this verse has a footnote in most translations that reads, “or hand.” So the verse with the footnote replacing the word power would read like this:

"Death and life are in the hand of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit." - Proverbs 18:21 NASB20

Now, that brings to focus how death and life are in the tongue. The words one speaks literally form their life, and the life of those who hear, as a hand would form a piece of pottery. James says it this way,

“For we all stumble in many [ways.] If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to rein in the whole body as well." - James 3:2 NASB20

This reminds us of the incredible power that our words possess. With both death and life held within the grasp of our tongues, our words can either bring about destruction and sorrow or breathe life and encouragement into our lives and the lives of others. Therefore, we have the great responsibility of choosing our words wisely. The power of the tongue is not to be taken lightly but rather recognized as an instrument capable of shaping lives and destinies.

The influential power that lies within the words we speak is like a double-edged sword. The tongue possesses the ability to build up or tear down, to inspire or discourage. It is a sobering responsibility to realize that the fruit of life is determined through the words spoken hours, days, weeks, and even years before. Through understanding, strive to speak life-giving words, words that breathe hope, courage, and joy into the lives of those around you to bring forth fruit that nourishes and sustains, leaving a profound impact on those who hear them.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, keep me from deliberate sins. Don't let them control me. Lord help me guard my heart and keep my mouth free of perversity. Lord may I keep corrupt talk far from my lips. For you have given me the tongue of a disciple so that I may know how to sustain a weary one with a word. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer. Through Christ let Your will be done in me, Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

(Psalm 19:13-14, Proverbs 4:23-24, Isaiah 50:4)
